Thoughts on Football

OK…We made it to the Super Bowl! I am not the biggest fan in the world but just ask the students in my Hebrew School class who’s team they want to be on and Teddy, Matt, Josh, Corey and Andrew will all say they I have some knowledge about the game.

But the big issue on hand is of course Sunday. What kind of spices to put in the avocado, which salsa goes with which chips and what are the spiritual lessons we should be thinking of in exactly 2 days, 4 hours, 37 minutes and 14 seconds (thanks NFL.com).?

My completely amateur (on football, that is) view is that the team that stays on offense the longest will come out on top. If the Patriots have the ball 31 minutes of the game…the Giants won’t get it done. You never hear the Defense saying “Lets get on the field so that the Offense can get some rest”. The team’s goal is to produce points and stay on the offensive. If they cant get things going…then the defense comes in to stop any opposition. But you want to keep moving the ball in YOUR direction.

In life it is the same: Our job is to stay on the offensive – always doing more and trying to get spiritual ‘points’. You should never hear “I have done enough – let’s get some rest and we will continue when we have the strength”. That is bad strategy.

We try anything at our disposal; running, passing, reverse hand offs, and the occasional trick play – as long as we are moving forward in the right direction, we are going to win.

So as we get prepared for the big kick-off, we also resolve in our personal-internal showdown to continue to be on the offensive’ always doing more and more to move in the right direction.

Oh, and I think the Giants will win by 5.
