Dr. & Mrs. Eliot & Renee Birnbaum

Dr. Eliot Birnbaum was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York although he was not involved in any organized Jewish activities, growing up in a mainly Jewish community made all his activities Jewish activities; Renee Birbaum grew up in Rosyln, New York in a Conservative Jewish household where her parents were very big Zionists and founders of Temple Beth Shalom so Judaism played an enormous role in her life.

Eliot attended SUNY Binghamton; Renee the University of Maryland.  It was when Eliot was attending Medial School at SUNY Downstate Medical center when he met Renee.

They were married in 1987 and spent three weeks honeymooning in Israel. It was during Eliot’s OB/Gyn training at George Washington University Medical Center when they welcomed their first born Matthew.  Living in Maryland at this time Renee immersed herself in the Jewish community. In 1992 they returned to Long Island where Eliot began his solo Obstetrics practice in Smithtown, NY.  In 1993 they welcomed their daughter Natalie to the family.

Renee has volunteered tirelessly over the past 17 years for many Jewish organizations in Suffolk County – Hadassah, the Suffolk JCC, the Synagogue and most important to her Solomon Schecter of Suffolk County where she held various positions from Co- PTA President to Board member.

Mr. & Mrs. Andrew & Aliza Haber

Andrew and Elisa Haber have lived in Smithtown, NY for the past 12 years. They both grew up on Long Island in Nassau County. Andrew and Elisa met at Stony Brook University in 1987 and were great friends throughout college. After college, they began dating and were married in 1994. They have 2 children, Rebecca who is 14, and Jason who is 11. Andrew is a mechanical engineer by education and is currently in a sales role, selling ophthalmic medical devices in the operating room. Elisa is a registered nurse, with vast experience, presently working as a visiting nurse with Gentiva Home Care Services.

The Habers first met Tuvia and Chaya Teldon when they enrolled their son Jason in the Jewish Academy for pre-k, as one of the founding families. Shortly after Jason was attending the school, they came to the Teldons for Shabbat and met Mendy and Brocha. Andrew and Elisa took an immediate liking to the Teldons, after a candid conversation regarding the congregation and families that go to the Chabad; they enrolled their daughter Rebecca in the Hebrew School. Since then, Andrew and Elisa have become very involved in the events and celebrations at Chabad, (Elisa was at the birth of Mendy and Brocha's 3rd child, as he was born during Rosh Hashanah). Rabbi Mendy performed the Bat Mitzvah ceremony for Rebecca after many hours of tutoring and practice with Brocha. Becca enjoyed and looked forward to meeting with Brocha each week for these lessons and has attended JLI classes at Chabad as well. The Habers are looking forward to their son's Bar Mitzvah in 2 years.

After belonging to another temple prior to joining Chabad, they couldn't be happier with their decision, and involvement with Chabad. As Andrew puts it, "Where else would we go to temple, and have the Rabbi on speed dial?"
